EP 006 – You don’t need an excuse to do fun things
Give yourself permission to do fun things that make you happy EVERY DAY, not just when you’re under the weather, or as a reward for your hard work.
Its easy to prioritise everything else over the fun things, but the small daily fun things are just as important in achieving your overall results.

Hey there, and welcome to the Fun Business Fun Money podcast!
Today I’ve got a quick tip for you, inspired by a post I saw on Facebook recently.
If you’re listening in real time its January 2023, which of course is summer for those of us in the Southern Hemisphere, and what seems to be a VERY harsh winter in the northern hemisphere.
Most of us Down Under are enjoying sunshine and blue skies, in fact I’m sitting here with the air con running on super quiet mode because otherwise I’ll be melting a puddle of humidity. Meanwhile a lot of my UK friends are tucked up inside with various head colds and illnesses to add to the winter fun.
I’m kidding, thats the LEAST fun part of anything, regardless of the season. I’m not a fan of being sick or unwell at the best of times!
Anyway, we’re not here to talk about the weather, although isn’t it funny how thats such a natural thing to kick off with??
What I DO want to talk about is giving yourself permission to do fun things that make you happy EVERY DAY, not just when you’re under the weather, or as a reward for your hard work.
The post that I saw was from someone who wasn’t feeling well and they were indulging in binge watching some shows on Netflix or some other streaming service. Which is GREAT! I’m a huge fan of binge watching stuff, especially a show that grabs my attention and I discover theres FIVE SEASONS to catch up on!
But what struck me about this was the fact that for so many of us it takes being unwell to take a little time out and do something that makes us happy. Theres an underlying belief that you have to earn it by working hard first, or to complete something so you can reward yourself.
Here’s a different perspective that I’m just gonna throw out there…
What if we gave ourselves permission to do something fun EVERY DAY?
Not next week when that thing is due, not just at the weekend when you’ve got 2 days off from your job. EVERY. DAY.
I think this also requires a different perspective on what fun actually is for you. We put so much emphasis on the big stuff like a week off work, a holiday or vacation somewhere, a special occasion, that sort of thing. But we overlook the SMALL stuff, like sitting down to watch a couple of episodes of your favourite show in the evenings with a cup of tea, glass of wine, whatever your thing is.
Other daily fun things could be taking 30 minutes to sit and read a fiction novel, something completely unrelated to your business. Maybe painting is your thing, or playing a musical instrument. Do a little each day instead of ‘saving it’ for when you’ve got more time.
Because guess what? We NEVER have more time.
Theres always something else that demands our attention, especially if you’ve got a family. So those fun things get pushed down the priorities list until they’re a distant memory of something you used to do.
When my kids were little there never seemed to be much spare time. I LOVE playing the piano, so while the boys were eating breakfast or brushing their teeth, I’d sit down to play for a few minutes before dropping them off at school and heading to my corporate job for the day.
Make your fun things a priority in whatever ways you can. It helps with stress levels of course, but it also helps reduce resentment because the things you love doing keep getting taken over by someone else’s demands.
Thats a whole other topic around boundaries that I’ll go into in a longer coaching episode, but hopefully you get the gist.
I’d love to hear your thoughts on this one – do you make time for your fun things every day? Or are you pushing them aside for the sake of work or other people’s needs?
Do you feel like you can’t possibly stop at 2 or 3 episodes, you HAVE to binge the lot?
Send me a DM on Facebook or Instagram and tell me how you’re fitting the fun stuff into your schedule! I’m @funbusinessfunmoney on both platforms, or you can email me at hello@deirdreamies.com – you’ll find the links to all of those in the show notes.
Thats it for this one, take care, have fun on a daily basis, and I’ll catch you in the next episode!
