You send an email packed with amazing insights and value… and people unsubscribe. Every. Single. Time!
This quick tip episode could be a game changer for your email list to help reduce the number of people who unsubscribe – at least for the wrong reasons. Use the power of your personality EVERYWHERE in your business, including the unsubscribe button!
Hey there, and welcome to the Fun Business Fun Money podcast.
If you’ve been listening for a while, thank you! I love getting emails and DMs from you with feedback about your favourite episodes and insights, keep that shizz up! Its nice to feel like I’m not just sitting here talking to myself, even though I totally am right now as I record this!
And if you’re just new here, maybe a friend suggested you take a listen or you randomly found it and thought “Fun business fun money… that sounds fun and interesting!” you would be RIGHT!
Of course I’m biased on that front, but its still true! If you like what you hear make sure you hit the follow button on your favourite platform so you don’t miss out on any future fun and interesting episodes.
Today is Thursday 20th of April – my goodness we’re fair whizzing through this year already!
Thursdays are a quick tip, tool or tactic episode, they’re meant to be under 10 minutes and they’re generally something that you can take and implement immediately to make your life, business and money easier, simpler and more fun.
So lets get straight into it and see if I can actually make this one less than 10 minutes!
What I want to share with you today relates to your email list, specifically the dreaded unsubscribe button.
It can feel like a personal affront when you send an email and someone unsubscribes, especially if you have a small list. And even more so if its someone you KNOW, perhaps you’re friends on social media and engage on each others posts, you feel like they’re a proper friend with a legit connection to them… and they don’t want your emails anymore.
Talk about DEVASTATING! Or maybe not, maybe you’re someone who can just shrug it off and move on without a second thought.
For a lot of us though, especially Connector and Nurturer archetypes like me and countless others who value the relationship we create with the people around us, it can be hard.
Don’t worry, if you’ve unsubscribed from MY emails, I’m not sitting in the corner over here crying about it or worrying that you don’t like me. I might have done that a few years back but I’m good with it – I literally shrug and move on.
Today’s tip is something that I think helps reduce the number of unsubscribes, especially if you’ve not emailed your list in a while and you’re suddenly reappearing in their inbox.
That just happened to me earlier today, I received an email from someone and I have absolutely no clue who they are or how I ended up on their list. Its entirely possible I DIDN’T subscribe, its still a thing for people to buy email addresses and add them to their database without consent. NOT COOL!
But it still happens unfortunately. And their unsubscribe button can unleash all sorts of malware onto your computer, so we have to be even more vigilant about what we’re opening and clicking on. Dammit!
That’s not you though! You’re a genuine person who has acquired their email address through legitimate means – that person gave their consent at some point to receiving emails from you.
As I’m looking at this random email from a random lady that I swear I’ve never heard of, it struck me that there was no ‘explanation’ as to how or why I’ve ended up on her list. The standard unsubscribe button is literally that – a hyperlinked word or button at the bottom of the email.
My tip for today is to PERSONALISE your unsubscribe link. I use MailerLite as my email service but I’m sure the option is similar across all of them.
If you’re on my email list, at the bottom of every email you’ll see a section that includes who I am, where I’m located and the unsubscribe button. I’ve included a little blurb right above that button that says…
“You received this email because you signed up via my amazing personality quiz, on my website or made a purchase from me.
In case you were wondering. Because people forget that kind of stuff.
Totally cool if you don’t want any more awesomeness in your inbox, just hit that link right there!”
And theres a downward pointy hand 👇 aimed right at the unsubscribe link, its not hidden at all.
THAT is the kind of info I would love to see on YOUR emails – and I’m sure your subscribers would love it too! We all need a reminder of who you are, what you do and why they’re receiving this thing from you.
Its just like when someone posts on social media for the first time in ages, you might see their post and wonder “Do I even know this person? Who ARE you??”
Don’t make people wonder how they got there – TELL THEM how they got there!
And don’t be all formal and weird about it, add a dash of your personality in there. Thats why mine says “In case you were wondering. Because people forget that kind of stuff. Totally cool if you don’t want any more awesomeness in your inbox.”
Thats how I talk!
Write it how YOU talk, make it a little tongue in cheek if you want, just because its inviting them to unsubscribe doesn’t mean it should be awkward.
So thats my tip for today, personalise your unsubscribe button and see what happens over time. You might just notice a reduction in the number of unsubscribers – or at least a reduction in the ones who say “I never signed up to receive these emails” – which is exactly what I said about the one I received today.
All that being said, make sure you’re on MY email list! You’ll find the link to sign up and get my weekly FUNday (which is Monday) emails in the description and in the show notes.
Take care, have fun bringing more of your personality into EVERYTHING you do, and I’ll catch you in the next episode.
