TRANSCRIPT
Hey there, and welcome to the Fun Business Fun Money podcast!
Today is a quick tip episode, or is it a tool? Or tactic? I don’t know, we’ll figure that out as we go. Either way, its something you can take and implement immediately.
Thats different to the longer coaching episodes that come out on Tuesdays, where we take a more in depth look at something for your business or money. Or fun! or all of it, all in one!
I was actually a little bit stuck on this one, not because I’ve run out of ideas, because trust me there are a GAJILLION of them! But theres so much going on that it can be hard to know what to do next, or first.
We’ve just rolled into a new tax year in Australia, which runs from 1st July to 30th June the following year over here. Its different everywhere else.
And that means there’s been a LOT of resistance to doing some fairly average and boring tasks like compiling the tax info for the accountant!
But that also reminded me of the handy dandy tool, or tactic, that was brought to us by the lovely Mel Robbins – the 5 Second Rule.
If you’ve not yet heard of it, where have you been??
The 5 Second Rule
This 5 Second Rule burst into the online world a few years back when she talked about it in an interview. She then shared some videos about it, got a lot of very interesting feedback from people who have implemented the 5 Second Rule and she wrote a book about it.
Its an incredibly simple concept – basically you’re counting down from 5 to 1, either in your head or out loud, and on the 1 its time to take action.
It could be as small as getting out of bed, which is where the original concept came from. Mel Robbins was going through severe anxiety and depression and she was struggling to find a reason to get out of bed. She started doing a launch-style countdown of 5 – 4 – 3 – 2 – 1 and BOOM! Sit up, get out of bed. Mission accomplished!
It doesn’t have to be any more complex than that.
I’ve used this myself when I’m procrastinating on something.
🚀 5 – 4 – 3 – 2 – 1 and I’m putting my phone down, getting out of my seat and taking the dogs for a walk.
🚀 5 – 4 – 3 – 2 – 1 and I’m walking into my office to record that podcast episode.
🚀 5 – 4 – 3 – 2 – 1 and I’m hitting publish on a post I’ve been over-editing and flip flopping on because its a bit controversial.
🚀 5 – 4 – 3 – 2 – 1 and I’m sitting down to do my taxes.
Whatever you’re faffing about with, try the 5 Second Rule.
You can read the book if you haven’t already, or check out the audio, its packed full of case studies and examples of people using the 5 Second Rule to propel themselves to victory, big and small. But you’ll get just as much value out of a couple of videos or even my simple explanation of it right here.
Thats what I’ve got for you today, short and sweet! Quit faffing about, go do the thing that just might change the trajectory of your life for the better!
Take care, have fun 5 – 4 – 3 – 2 – 1 launching yourself into action, and I’ll catch you in the next episode! 🚀🚀🚀
