TRANSCRIPT
Hey there, and welcome back to the Fun Business Fun Money podcast!
I’m having a little laugh at myself because I just walked away from my laptop after saying “I’m done for the day, I’ll finish the rest tomorrow.”
I sat down and scrolled through some emails on my phone while having a bite to eat, and one of the emails sparked the idea for this episode.
So here I am, back at my desk, no time like the present and all that!
What I wanted to share with you, that may be relevant right now or some time soon, is this:
Building something new is like climbing a mountain. Its super fun, you have a clear goal in sight to reach the summit and your creativity is ON FIRE! Its a mega buzz!
But those long flat stretches in between hills and mountains? Thats the tedious part of business that can feel like a never ending marathon. That’s where you get to see your true endurance capabilities.
THAT is why its so important to find the balance between fun, profitability and sustainability.
FUN
Fun shouldn’t just be reserved for those big buzzy mountains such as launches and big growth periods. Fun needs to happen EVERY DAY. It shows up in the actual work you choose to do, whatever that is – your zone of genius!
I absolutely love writing and creating, so theres no way I’d ever hand that over to AI. Its a core part of the fun in my work day. But for so many others, its a drag. They don’t enjoy that aspect, but they get a kick out of something else.
How you define fun is completely up to you.
Just make sure whatever you’re doing, its fun, enjoyable and makes you happy as you get to the end of the day and reflect on what you’ve just done. You say “Damn, that was a good day!”
PROFIT
In a similar theme, making money and having a profitable business can be SUPER FUN! Especially if its a big influx of the good stuff. But what about the long haul phase where you’re between mountains?
What can you do to generate a consistent flow of money into your business and life?
You might need to create some recurring revenue sources, online programs and things people can buy that don’t require a lot of your ongoing time and energy.
Make sure you prepare for the exciting mountain climbing phases with big publicity and marketing things, AND the marathon phase of making money, and you’ll always have a profitable business.
Thats where having a simple money management framework like Profit First comes into play.
You’re less likely to fall into scarcity mindset when you know you’ve already allocated funds for expenses, taxes and set aside your profit percentage. That’s what will see you through those leaner times.
If you’re not familiar with Profit First, its a framework created by Mike Michalowicz that has helped thousands of small business owners be profitable from day one. It’s simple to use and implement, definitely check out Mike’s book Profit First – I’ll add the link in the show notes.
SUSTAINABILITY
The third part that we need to balance in this equation is ‘sustainability’. I’m pretty sure nobody envisions starting their business and having to close it up a year or two down the track because its no longer viable.
There are exceptional circumstances like we’ve experienced in recent years with the pandemic of course, but for the most part, building a sustainable business should be at the forefront of your mind.
A sustainable business is what gets you through those long marathon periods. Its the consistent normal standard of quality, deliverables, revenue, profit, the clients that you can handle without burning yourself out.
Or anyone else for that matter!
Working at a sustainable pace so you have consistent energy, focus and fun means you’ve got to balance your time.
I’ve talked before about how I’m at my best when I work in the morning, play in the afternoons, spend some time with my family over dinner, and depending on the day I’ll have some client calls in the evening as well.
Thats a sustainable routine for me at this stage of my business. What does yours look like?
It may change over time as you grow and scale, so we always have to be checking in on these balances in each of these areas.
Is this still fun?
Is this profitable?
Is this sustainable?
Ride those euphoric highs as you climb the mountains and reach your goals. And appreciate your resilience and endurance capabilities during the marathon phase in between.
IGNITE is you and me working on your business, one on one for 6 months or more. You get my full attention!
You’ll learn my framework for a fun, profitable , sustainable business, and you get the ongoing support to implement it.
If that sounds like your kinda thing,
send me a DM and lets talk! I’m @funbusinessfunmoney, all one word, on Facebook and Instagram.
You’ll find the links to all of those in the description of this episode and in the show notes.
Thats what I’ve got for you today!
Quick tip – Climbing mountains is an absolute thrill ride for sure, but the seemingly boring in between parts that require mental and physical toughness can be too.
Take care, have fun whatever phase you’re currently in, and I’ll catch you in the next episode!
