TRANSCRIPT

Hey there, and welcome back to the Fun Business Fun Money podcast!

If this is your FIRST time listening, a special hello and welcome to YOU! I’m glad you’re here and I hope you find something useful in this and all the other episodes.

And to all my long time listeners, you’re AWESOME! I’m glad you find something worth coming back for week after week!

Today is a quick tip episode, in theory its less than 10 minutes but lets just say thats a variable indicator! There are no hard and fast rules that say I HAVE to stick to 10 minutes or less!

I was searching through Evernote the other day for something I knew I’d written a few years back. This episode isn’t about Evernote, but side note – I will say I absolutely love it!

I’ve been using it since about 2014, and while I’m now mostly using Google Docs for writing most of my content these days, I continue to use Evernote because its less distracting. I’ve used it for my journalling since 2015!

If I’m working in a Google Doc there are all these other tabs open as well, and my little squirrel brain starts to wonder whats over there – even though they’re all beautifully organised within tab groups to minimise distractions!

Working in Evernote means all that stuff is in the background, theres just the note in front of me. Thats where I write all my podcast notes for that very reason!

But like I said, this episode ISN’T about Evernote. I do recommend you check it out though if you’re looking for a simple, clean way to organise your info.

What this episode IS about is The ONE Thing. Thats what I was searching for, the key phrase from the book, “The One Thing” by Gary Keller and Jay Papasan.

I read this book way back in 2016, it would have been one of the earliest personal development books I read. I think it was during my mass consumption phase, I read 33 personal development books in 12 months, retained very little of the info – except for truly important things like The ONE Thing.

I wanted to share this with you because I think its super easy to get distracted by ALL the things – I mean hello, I’ve just explained why I use Evernote, to minimise distractions haha!

There is so much noise and demand for our attention every single day, its not going away, and I think its actually driving the interest in AI to be honest. We’re looking for ways to exist in the shouty loudness without draining more of our energy, and AI such as ChatGPT certainly offer that band aid solution.

Thats another rabbit hole topic we can go down some other time!

This catchphrase from The ONE Thing is –

“What is the One Thing I can do, such that by doing it everything else would be easier or unnecessary?”

ONE THING.
One action.
One area of focus.
One task.
One thought.
One feeling.
One step.

Thats all we need to do.

Now the overarching theme of the actual book, The ONE Thing is that this phrase supports us in achieving our goals.

Lets say you have a big hairy audacious goal, aka a BHAG, that you want to achieve. You know its going to take a bit of time, maybe even a few years.

If you don’t map that goal out and chunk it down to smaller bite sized pieces that you can take reasonable action on, its a wish and a dream. Its a thought in your head, its a ‘maybe some day’.

And THAT is a crying shame to let something that can potentially have a positive impact on countless lives wither and die.

I mean, no pressure or anything!

This phrase can help you get into action today, this week, this month, this year. This MOMENT! Whats the one thing you can do right now that will make everything else easier or unnecessary?

Make the call.
Send the message.
Write the post.
Ask for what you want.

Just ONE THING is all it takes.

That doesn’t mean you should then sit back and take the rest of the day off, but taking that one action can be the catalyst for more action, more momentum, more results.

This reminds me of a TV ad in New Zealand YEARS ago, probably the late 80s or early 90s, for a chocolate and marshmallow biscuit called a Mallowpuff – the Kiwis will know EXACTLY what I’m talking about! Their catchphrase was “Have you done enough for a Mallowpuff?”

And of course theres a wide range of what ‘enough’ was – like getting the lawnmower out and mowing enough of the grass to set up your deck chairs so you can enjoy a cuppa and a Mallowpuff.

It still cracks me up, but its the perfect analogy for those who feel like doing ONE THING is enough for the day, week, month or year.

One thing is good, but use it to spur you into MORE action so you can really get your business rolling and make a difference.

Thats what I’ve got for you today – whats the one thing you can do today, this week, this month, this year, that by doing so makes everything else easier or unnecessary?

Go do that. And then do the next thing. And the next thing.

Take ACTION, have fun doing things, and I’ll catch you in the next episode!
